Hand Painted Hanging Scroll TITLE : Samurai, Battle of Uji Battle of Uji (1184) is the battle which Minamoto no Yoshinaka (1154-1184) tried to wrest power from his cousins Yoritomo (1147-1199) and Yoshitsune
1159-1189), seeking to take command of the Minamoto clan. To that end, he burned the Hojuji Palace and kidnapped Emperor Go-Shirakawa (1127-1192). However, his cousins Noriyori (1156-1193) and Yoshitsune caught up with him soon afterwards, following him across the Bridge over the Uji, New Year's Day, 1184, which Yoshinaka had torn up to impair their crossing. Signature (Seal) : MORI KOGA (1791-1864) also known as Takamasa, was an ukiyo-e and yamoto-e painter born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. He studied Kano-school painting from Ikkei Yoshikawa (1763-1837), then Nanga from Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853), and ukiyo-e from Maki Bokusen (1775-1824). He later learned Tosa-school painting from Tosa Mitsuzane (1780-1852). He had many disciples and was active as a painter of Tosa-school in the late Edo period.
